Last week, the House passed H.R. 268, a bill I introduced to add the Fort Brown earthworks to the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park in Brownsville, Texas.

The bill authorizes the transfer of property from the International Boundary and Water Commission to the National Park Service to be part of the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, which also includes the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield unit.

Adding this piece of Fort Brown to the Palo Alto National Battlefield Historical Park helps tell our nation’s story; it is critical to preserving history and honoring the lives lost in the battle that established our nation’s border.

I thank my colleagues in Congress for their support of my bill, as well as the National Park Service and local South Texas community leaders who have all played a role in this accomplishment.

This month, I introduced legislation to rename the Brownsville Post Office in honor of First Lieutenant Andres Zermeno.  First Lieutenant Zermeno was killed in action during combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2011.  In honor of his courageous efforts and service, the post office would be renamed the “First Lieutenant Andres Zermeno Post Office”.

A South Texas native, First Lieutenant Zermeno was born in Brownsville on November 30, 1984, and grew up in the Rio Grande Valley. He graduated with a degree in psychology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. While attending St. Mary’s University, First Lieutenant Zermeno was an active member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and the campus ministry. He met his wife, Rachel, during his time at St. Mary’s; they married in 2007 and had two children. Known for his optimism and bravery, First Lieutenant Zermeno is described as a true leader by his peers and superiors.

First Lieutenant Zermeno is not only one of our Nation’s heroes, he is also a hometown hero. I believe that it is fitting to rename the United States Post Office in Brownsville, Texas, in honor of his brave service to his country. This dedication will memorialize First Lieutenant Zermeno in our community and recognize his sacrifice for generations to come.”
