Peñitas, Texas: A significant announcement in Peñitas has set the stage for a transformative chapter in the city’s growth and development. Anibal Resendez, Assistant Chief Administrator for Precinct 3, greeted a gathering of local citizens and dignitaries to unveil the Liberty Road Project, a critical initiative for the rapidly growing western part of Hidalgo County.

Senator Chuy Hinojosa announced a combined funding of $4.9 million for the Liberty Road Project, with $2.9 million from the state of Texas and $2.4 million from the county. This initiative is essential for boosting the local economy and improving community life, especially after the financial challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner Everardo “Ever” Villarreal, the pillar figure of the project, highlighted the challenges faced during the pandemic, including rising costs and funding issues. His vision involves connecting rural areas to city amenities, promoting job growth, and increasing tax revenue for the county. He emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing economic growth and mobility in west Hidalgo County.

Hector Siller, TxDOT Area Engineer from the Pharr Office, representing Pedro Alvarez, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential to enhance safety, connectivity, and foster economic growth. The Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (RGVMPO) contributed an additional $2.44 million, while TxDOT allocated an extra $2.46 million, bolstering the original earmark of $9.45 million for the project.

The Liberty Road Expansion Project spans 2.4 miles from U.S. Highway 83 to 3 Mile Line Road. It involves constructing a four-lane urban roadway with a continuous two-way left-turn lane and sidewalk infrastructure, serving as a major north-south corridor that enhances mobility in the City of Peñitas.

Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and Commissioner Villarreal expressed their appreciation for the collaborative efforts of all parties involved. Their dedication to securing funding for the Liberty Road Project reflects a shared commitment to improving the quality of life for the community and paving the way for more growth and economic development.
