PHARR – Rocking poodle skirts and vintage 50s outfits, over 650 Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA) alumni, staff, and parents united for the Centennial Sock Hop Dance hosted at the Pharr Events Center on Oct. 24. The dance was one of several events planned to celebrate the district’s 100-year legacy during the 2019-2020 school year.
The event had free admission and featured community members and PSJA ISD alumni from several classes that drove from near and far to attend. Classes who attended included: 1944, 1958, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1985, 1986, 1988, and 2013.
For Connie Lozano, a PSJA Class of 1969 Alumni, attending the dance with her classmates was an unforgettable experience.
“The dance was a great way to reunite. I even had a cousin from Houston who drove down to join us,” said the PSJA alumna who reserved four tables for her group. “It was great to see all the classes as well as our friends and classmates. We hope this becomes an annual event.”
The PSJA Sock Hop Dance is the second of several events and activities that will take place during the school year to celebrate the district’s 100-year legacy. According to the PSJA Communications Director Arianna Vazquez-Hernandez, this was the first dance of its kind hosted by the district. It was a team effort made possible thanks to various PSJA ISD departments working together as part of the PSJA Centennial Planning Committee.
The dance featured decorations and cakes made by dedicated parent volunteers taking Cake Decorating and Arts & Crafts classes through the PSJA Parental Engagement Program.
PSJA ISD thanks everyone who made it possible and the following individuals for their generous contributions: City of Pharr, DJ David Villegas, and Snapix Photo Booth.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us,” said Jesus “Jesse” Vela, Jr., a PSJA School Board Member and PSJA Class of 1966 Alum, during the dance. “You all have been instrumental in shaping the legacy of PSJA.”
The next event planned is the PSJA Centennial 5K/10K Run/Walk happening Nov. 16, 2019 at the PSJA Stadium. The race is open to everyone and will feature once in a lifetime medals and shirts. Individuals interested in participating can register at www.psjaisd.us/5K
