McAllen, TX—McAllen City Manager Isaac Tawil took the stage Wednesday morning at the MXLAN 2025 press conference to make a major announcement: the long-awaited return of the prestigious “Border Texan of the Year” dinner, which will now serve as the festival’s official opening gala.
Set for May 8, 2025, the night before MXLAN kicks off, the Border Texan of the Year dinner will honor visionary leaders who have shaped the Rio Grande Valley across education, health, infrastructure, business, and civic engagement.
“Since 1989, this prestigious event has honored trailblazers across the Rio Grande Valley,” Tawil said. “By weaving this historic celebration into MXLAN, we are creating something even more beautiful—a tapestry where history, culture, legacy, and the future collide.”
The announcement drew enthusiastic applause from attendees, which included city commissioners, business leaders, media partners, and cultural advocates. Tawil praised the Mayor and City Commission for their vision and support, as did Commissioner Rudy Castillo, who earlier spoke on the importance of empowering McAllen’s youth.
“Commissioner Castillo reminds us daily of the mission to create opportunities for our young people,” Tawil noted. “Events like MXLAN don’t just celebrate culture—they build it.”
This year’s MXLAN, themed “Our Roots,” will take place May 9–12, 2025, showcasing Latino youth culture’s art, music, food, and traditions. It will also include new programming and community partnerships layers, expanding its reach and impact.
“In McAllen, we don’t just move forward,” Tawil said. “We soar forward—with boundless energy, unshakable pride, and clear purpose.”
Tawil also credited the success of the festival to the city’s dedicated staff, sponsors, and volunteers:
“Your commitment and heart breathe life into MXLAN. This isn’t just a festival. It’s a story—our story—brought to life.”
The Border Texan of the Year Dinner will spotlight a yet-to-be-announced honoree who exemplifies service and leadership across the Valley. In past years, recipients have included community icons who have left a lasting mark on the region.
“Mark your calendars for May 8,” Tawil said. “It’s a moment you won’t want to miss—a night when the Valley erupts in unity and pride.”
