“Developing Our Workforce for Jobs of the Future”, Friday, September 28, 2018; 8:30 am – 1:30 pm
Texas Border Business
This Bi-National Innovation Conference INNO has become a must-attend event. The topics selected to discuss are visionary, astonishing with a positive impact for the present and the future. Six years ago one of the topics selected to discuss was about a bridge in Mexico that has transformed our region and changed how produce from Mexico is delivered to North America.
I am talking about the Baluarte Bridge, which construction began in 2008, inaugurated in January 2012 and opened to traffic in late 2013. Imagine, this bridge is about 500 miles away from South Texas, and according to Mario Reyna, Dean of Business and Technology Division South Texas College, this bridge has been the engine for what is happening in the Valley. He said, “Aside from having thousands of trailers crossing our bridges now we have all these cold storage companies opening.”
The Baluarte Bridge has opened multiple opportunities for international trade, its impact is the generation of more business with Mexico.
Year after year, the Bi-National Innovation Conference has touched the economic nerve of the region, reaching both countries. The topics make a difference by its positive impact in this region. Dean Reyna also said that people talked about how different emerging technologies or projects will impact in the future. He said, “So, now the idea is jobs, what are we looking for the future?”
Dean Reyna continued to say that the emergence of a new and dynamic economy, fueled largely by technological innovation, globalization, and shifting commercial relations, has led entities in both the public and private sectors to redefine the characteristics they seek in a modern workforce.
The 6th Bi-National Innovation Conference hosted by South Texas College creates an opportunity for leaders of the area. Their contribution is as simple as participating by unifying forces with the college.
More and more employers are prioritizing the ability to understand and apply new technology, adapt to different work environments, and exhibit proficiency in the ever-important area of soft skills. As has always been the case, regions that provide a workforce with the skills demanded by employers will prosper, while others will be left behind.
As leading regional institutions of higher learning, South Texas College and El Instituto Internacional de Estudios Superiores are collaborating in hosting the 6th Annual Conference on Innovation, where they will explore the skills needed to make students of the region more competitive in the modern labor market and how to attract businesses seeking these skills.
Mark your calendar, and join South Texas College and share your input on these topics with experts from both the public and private sectors, and political figures such as Texas State Senator Juan Hinojosa.
In addition to the presentations, the agenda will include guided round-table discussions and a speaker panel to capture viewpoints from all attendees. Audience participation will be encouraged and the Conference is open to the general public.
“This event is for everybody,” Dean Reyna said, “but in particular we want the business community and the public schools to attend,” he finalized.
