In preparation for the celebration of the Rio Grande Valley Livestock event, Texas Border Business met with Sara Garcia Cruz Miss Cover Girl 1953 a native of Rio Grande City and the daughter of Miguel and Hermelinda Lopez Garcia
That was 61 years ago, we found her in Mercedes participating during the selection of the Miss Cover 2015.
She was 17 years of age when she won the honor to be Miss Cover 1953. At the time she was already engaged and married 2 years later.
She pointed out that there was no professional career to pursue because girls back then were not expecting to go to college for a career.
Sara later found work as a nurse’s aid at a local school; she also worked in bookkeeping, Community Action and Federal Programs.
She said that she had been working at the Hospital Auxiliary for the last 25 years; and loved to work with the church and taking communion to the Nursing Homes. She has two sons and a daughter and five grand daughters.
Tells how were you able to win this competition? “Because I was selected, the judges came from all over and as far as Austin Texas,” she said. TBB
