6 McAllen ISD mariachi students participate in TMEA event

Six McAllen ISD mariachi students, selected through an audition, took part in the 24th Annual Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region 15 Mariachi Clinic and Concert March 30-31 in La Joya. 

“They put on a spectacular concert at the La Joya ISD Performing Arts Complex along with the Top 100 mariachi students from across our entire region that got to study as well as perform under world-class clinicians from Seattle, Washington; Las Vegas, Nevada; and San Antonio in a two-day clinic and concert event,” McAllen High Mariachi Oro Instructor Alex Trevino said. 

The selectees included five students from McAllen High’s five-time state champion Mariachi Oro: Cristian Contreras, Natalie Carmona, Ashley Treviño,  Jesús Villegas and Andrew Morales. McAllen Memorial High’s Miguel Macias also earned a spot.

The students were selected through a blind audition process in January where they competed with more than 450 students from across the Region. Officials selected the top 50 High School students as well as the top 50 Middle School students for these prestigious ensembles.
