The City of Edinburg invites the community to the 5th Annual Fridafest, a festival that celebrates renowned Mexican Artist, Frida Kahlo as well as the spirit of perseverance and empowerment. This annual festival will take place at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard on Saturday, July 21st, 2018 starting at 5 p.m.

The festival will include a play by the Lucia Macias Theatre Company titled: ā€œBuscando a Fridaā€ ā€“ An Homage to Frida Kahlo that will be performed in English, the play includes an exhibit of representations by the artist, Jose Cano of some of Fridaā€™s paintings. Also, featured will be an all-female art exhibit curated by Eva Williamson of Edinburg as well as the popular Frida and Diego look-a-like contests for both children and adults. The evening performances include live music by The Dirty Birdies as well as dramatized poetry by Grupo Literario ā€œAlas para Volarā€ from Matamoros.

On this 5th anniversary, FridaFest will incorporate a Frida Procession that will start at the corner of McIntyre and 10th St. and will continue down McIntyre until they reach the courtyard. Before the start of the Fridafest procession, the festival will strive to set a record for the ā€œLargest gathering of people dressed as Frida Kahloā€, this will follow with a March of Empowerment in celebration of womanhood.

FridaFest will kick off at 5 p.m. with the Frida Empowerment Panel at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium located at 415 W. University Drive. The Frida Empowerment Panel brings together strong women from the community to inspire the new generations of young women and girls and to highlight and celebrate their strengths and accomplishments.

FridaFest is an annual event hosted by the City of Edinburg in celebration of the Life of renowned Mexican Artist, Frida Kahlo. Kahlo began painting in the late 1920s, she married famed muralist Diego Rivera in 1929. Sheā€™s best known for her daring self-portraits depicting the suffering she experienced; she is a popular feminist icon celebrated for her passionate indomitability in the face of lifeā€™s trials. Frida was the first 20th Century Latin American artist to have her work purchased by the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. She was a woman of character who persevered in spite of her physical pain and emotional turmoil. She is now one of the most iconic female artists of all time and one of the most celebrated.

FridaFestĀ© 2018 is a free event for the entire community, it includes live music, artists, food vendors, plenty of childrenā€™s activities and lots of great Frida inspired art.
