Cameron County is pleased to announce that the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation has approved and awarded $500,000 to Cameron County for the development of the Olmito Nature Park. This grant funding will assist with the construction of Phase I of this project which includes: nature trails, fishing piers, birdwatch overlooks, wildlife viewing areas, an educational pavilion, nature scape playgrounds, interpretive signage, wildlife-friendly lighting, green open space, comfort stations, picnic shelters, benches, drinking fountains, butterfly gardens, native landscaping, restrooms/comfort stations and other supporting amenities.
In 2019, Frank Michael McKinney and Jane E. McKinney donated approximately 39.16 acres to Cameron County for the development of this nature park. To date, Cameron County has received the following funding from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD): Outdoor Recreational Grant Program in the amount of $750,000, Boating Access Planning Grant in the amount of $52,500, and $250,000 from the Trails Grant Program.
“The awarded funding will assist with the development of this first and grand phase of the Olmito Nature Park. We look forward to phase initiation and completions very soon. Another grant commitment for this great amenity in the works,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr.

“Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation has made quite a few investments in parks and trails over the past 10 years, with a goal of providing free access to the community to green space that allows for a variety of physical activity options. We are excited about the plans for Olmito Park and look forward to celebrating the completion of Phase 1!,” stated Judy Quisenberry, Executive Director of the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation.
