LAS VEGAS – Fourth-seeded The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell to the fifth-seeded New Mexico State University Aggies 73-61 in the Hercules Tires Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals presented by Ticketsmarter on Wednesday at Orleans Arena.

Graduate student Desirea Buerge led the Vaqueros (13-17) with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double. Senior Zhane Templeton scored 14 points while hitting three three-pointers. Junior Trelynn Tyler finished with 10 points.

Soufia Inoussa led the Aggies (12-18) with 16 points and six rebounds.Adrianna Henderson finished with 15 points.

Tyler and Templeton hit a pair of early threes as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Aggies responded by scoring the next seven points as part of an 11-2 run to take a 13-8 lead at the start of the second quarter.

After a Templeton layup brought the Vaqueros to within 13, the Aggies went on another 7-0 run to go up 22-12.

The Aggies took their largest lead of the half in the final seconds on a three by Inoussa that made the score 32-20.

Buerge opened the third quarter with back-to-back layups as the Vaqueros went on a 10-4 run to climb to within 36-30. The Aggies answered with eight-straight points to go up 44-30. Freshman Sara Bershers and Templeton followed with a pair of threes to cut the deficit to 44-36.

The Aggies went on a 7-2 run to push their lead to 51-38 at the start of the fourth. The Vaqueros scored the next six points, capped by a three by junior Amara Graham, to make the score 51-44.

The Aggies extended their lead to 61-47 with 5:10 remaining. The Vaqueros responded with an 11-4 run to pull within 65-58 with 1:03 left, but that’s as close as they got.
