EDINBURG, TX – Palm Valley Animal Society is in urgent need of 2-week, temporary foster caregivers for dozens of their youngest pets, some with mothers, as they await rescue transfer. Multiple rescues are interested in transporting these pets but housing them temporarily in foster homes is required for their travel clearance.
It is essential for the shelter to place current pets in homes, as they have reached critical capacity this month, with 1,336 pets in custody as of August 20th. Dozens of these pets are still nursing, still too small to be placed for adoption or under 5 months old. Infant puppies and kittens’ developing immune systems have a harder time fighting illness, and even the best shelters can be stressful for pets. Foster homes are the ideal place to care for these pets. The shelter has dozens of kittens and puppies, some of whom are with nursing mothers, who need foster homes immediately.
“We are asking our community to step up to foster pets, adopt if they are ready, or come out to the shelter to volunteer,” says Donna Casamento, Executive Director. “The shelter should be a last resort for healthy animals, and we need our community and our municipal partners to work toward keeping healthy pets with their families instead.”
FOSTER A TRANSPORT PET
Medical care will be provided for these pets. Anyone who wants to foster is encouraged to come to the shelter daily from 11-7 or sign up online at www.pvastx.org/foster.
FOSTER OR ADOPT OTHER PETS IN NEED
The shelter needs fosters and adopters for all types of pets. By fostering, families will be able to care for a shelter pet temporarily, which will free up space for other adoptable pets at the shelter. Families will be asked to foster an animal for a minimum of two weeks but are welcome to foster a pet even longer if they would like.
DONATE
If you’d like to support the shelter’s lifesaving efforts but do not have space for a new friend at home, monetary donations are also needed to fund pet rescue transports. See their website at www.pvastx.org to make a donation.
The shelter has temporarily restricted new admission to emergency services only as they focus on placing current shelter residents in homes.
