EDINBURG, Texas –Â Palm Valley Animal Society will be providing a $150 gift card to the foster caregivers of one dozen nursing moms and their puppies, thanks to a grant from Maddie’s Fund. The grant will also fund the shelter’s stock of foster supplies so, as always, foster caregivers will leave with everything they need to care for their foster pets. The grant is part of a small study focused on determining the impact of providing resources, including a stipend, on the likelihood of fostering and positive outcomes for pets.Â
Â
As one of the shelter’s most vulnerable populations, nursing moms with puppies are most in need of foster care placement. Nursing puppies’ immune systems aren’t fully developed, which can increase their chances of becoming ill when they’re around other dogs. In a foster home, their exposure to contagious illness is limited. Foster pets also spend their time learning how to live in a home and practice forming attachments with their caregivers until they’re adopted or transferred to a rescue partner.
Â
To be eligible for the $150 gift card, caregivers must foster the family until the pets are either transferred or adoption-ready. Becoming a foster is easy, and no experience is required. PVAS will teach fosters all they need to know to care for these families. Sign up online at https://www.pvastx.org/foster or visit either the PVAS Trenton Center or PVAS Andrews Center during the shelter’s operating hours of Monday – Thursday from 2 pm – 7 pm and Friday – Sunday from 12 pm – 7 pm.
