Three PSJA Science Teachers Selected to Participate in Summer NASA Program

UTRGV biology major and UTeach student Gabriela Rodriguez this summer will conduct Girlstart Summer Camps, teaching elementary students about growing plants in space and how to code a robot. The Laredo native was selected for an internship as a co-leader with Girlstart, an organization that focuses on engaging young girls in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The internship requires Rodriguez to conduct a STEM camp in the Rio Grande Valley for the first two weeks of June, and another in Dallas the last two weeks. UTRGV hosted the first HESTEC GreenPowerUSA South Texas Electric Car Competition, held April 6-7 at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport. Thirty two teams representing middle school, high school and colleges from across South Texas competed in the competition, which delivered the excitement of motorsport to inspire students to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) studies. The Texas Regional STEM Degree Accelerator (TRSDA) at South Texas College has concluded its nearly three-year grant. Throughout the grant, TRSDA trained more than 170 STEM faculty from across the region, and successfully brought together leaders in healthcare and information technology industries. Natalie Johnson (left), a mathematics professor from Tarrant County College South Campus and Joan Shriver, a computer science professor from Tarrant County College Northwest Campus attended the final consortium meeting on April 6.
