Today, the City of McAllen announced a one-of-a-kind exhibit that will be on display at the McAllen Convention Center Ballroom, 700 Convention Center Blvd., starting on October 15, 2021. Michelangelo: A Different View is a breathtaking exhibit of Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Frescoes. The exhibit will run through November 7 and tickets will begin at $10 for children under 12, and $17 or $22, depending on the day of the week.
Picture being inside the Sistine Chapel in Rome, surrounded by Michelangelo’s most famous works. Starting Oct. 15, the entire community is invited to experience it, while walking within the world’s most authentic re-creation of the amazing frescoes. The exhibit features 29 recreated pieces, including “The Last Judgement” and “The Creation of Adam.”
According to McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez, McAllen has become a cultural experience leader, thanks in part to the City of McAllen’s investment in world-class facilities that are able to host a year-round calendar of events, including events, concerts, Broadway shows, art convention and unique festivals, as well as the work of community partner organizations and City of McAllen employees.
“Today, we again unite to announce McAllen’s next great cultural experience – an event that will bring you and your family closer than you ever thought possible to the world’s most beautiful art,” said Rodriguez. “And for the young, an opportunity to picture themselves inside something most people will never have the opportunity to see.”
Under the license of the Vatican Museums, this exhibit offers the most complete and authentic reproduction of Michelangelo’s magnificent ceiling frescoes in combination with the Quattrocento frescoes of the Sistine Chapel to be shown outside the Vatican. The exhibit will feature a guided audio tour; video presentation; interactive experiences; souvenir shop; and a social media wall.
The arts are important to the City of McAllen’s future. When a young person in McAllen connects with art from another time or culture, their perspective on the world grows,” said McAllen Mayor Pro Tem Joaquin “J.J.” Zamora. “ The arts inspire self-expression and the discipline to take an idea from a pure concert and express it in concrete form. Our team at the McAllen Convention Center has taken an ambitious concept and will soon make it a reality: the idea to bring a world-famous art experience into the McAllen Convention Center Grand Ballroom.”
Tickets and special events, including a wine & cheese reception and other unique viewing opportunities to enjoy the exhibit, will soon be available for purchase. Tickets will be available at www.ticketmaster.com.
The Michelangelo: A Different View exhibit is part of McAllen’s Fiesta de Palmas annual celebration of the heritage and culture found in South Texas, this year, taking place at the McAllen Convention Center facilities on Oct. 23-24, 2021.
