WACO, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s tennis team was defeated 7-0 by the (RV) Baylor Bears in the season-opening match Saturday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
BU (2-0) went up 1-0 after doubles wins at No. 2 (6-2) and No. 3 (6-4). UTRGV competed well on the doubles courts and made the Bears work for the point. The No. 1 duo of sophomores Marjorie Souza and Barbara Martinez were battling in their match, but it went unfinished with the Vaqueros trailing 3-5 once the point was secured.
The Bears clinched the team victory with singles wins in the sixth, fourth and first flights. The Vaqueros (0-1) continued to fight on the other three courts, keeping their second sets tightly contested.
Junior Lea Karren took a 5-4 lead in the second set of her No. 2 match after dropping the first 6-1 to Isabella Harvison. Then, she used a big serve and endured long rallies to win the frame 6-4, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. Karren opened up a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker, but Harvison fired back to take an 8-5 lead. Karren’s serve ended the scoring run, and down 9-6 she delivered a sinking shot just over the net and a rocket down the line to make it 9-8. Harvison held on to win 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
UTRGV plays Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center against Houston.
