EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s soccer team announced on Friday that it will play 18 matches leading up to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, including 11 at home, starting on August 22 against the University of Miami as part of the UTRGV Tournament at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
“One thing for sure, is there are a lot of home games,” UTRGV head coach Glad Bugariu said. “That really helps. We have been really good at home the last couple of years and we want to continue being dominant and making this place a fortress. That’s number one and number two, of course, we have a slate of exciting games including the opener against the University of Miami.”
UTRGV will stay at home to face Alabama State University on September 24 to close out the UTRGV Tournament before hitting the road to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on August 30.
UTRGV will then kick off four straight matches at home starting with UTEP on September 1 before welcoming in Southern Utah on September 6, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on September 15, and Grambling State on September 20.
A couple of days later, UTRGV will head up to College Station to face Texas A&M on September 22 before coming back home to host Texas Lutheran on September 26.
“We want to put ourselves in position to be as competitive as we can in these games,” Bugariu said. “We want to give ourselves the chance to win as many games as possible each year. We also want to make sure that we challenge our team in different ways against different opponents that they might see in conference. We are looking for balance and I don’t know if we had balance the last couple of years. I think the schedules have been quite tough but we have risen up to the challenge and hope to do the same this year.”
After going on the road to face SIU-Carbondale on September 29, UTRGV will remain on the road to open WAC play against Kansas City on October 4. The WAC home opener will be on October 6 as UTRGV plays host to Grand Canyon and then it welcomes in Chicago State on October 12.
UTRGV will visit California Baptist on October 18 before coming home to host CSU Bakersfield on October 20. After facing Utah Valley on October 24 and Seattle U on October 26 on the road UTRGV will close out the regular season at home against New Mexico State on November 2.
The WAC Tournament will be hosted by Seattle U this season from November 6-10 with the winner clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
