“We have been looking to open a Harbor Freight Tools location in Weslaco,” says Craig Hoffman, Director, Corporate Communications & Content for Harbor Freight, “and we are very appreciative of the efforts of the City Leaders and the Economic Development Corporation for all of their cooperation and enthusiasm in helping this become a reality.”

In early May, 2020, the company broke ground for a 16,000 sq. ft. building along Highway 83, frontage with an opening targeted for fall, 2020.

Harbor Freight stores stock a full selection of tools and accessories in categories including automotive, air and power tools, storage, outdoor power equipment, generators, welding supplies, shop equipment and hand tools with lifetime warranties and much more.

The brand now operates more than 1,050 store locations nation-wide and continues to open new stores every month. “When you take into consideration that the COVID-19 pandemic crippled business around the world,” says Benita Valadez, EDC Board Vice President, “it is encouraging to see that our business-minded culture and leadership in Weslaco can still attract and sustain companies like Harbor Freight.”

The company expects to hire 35 new employees and will announce future dates for accepting applications.  EDC Board President, Juan J. “JJ” Serrano believes that these new jobs to Weslaco, could not have come at a better time. “The unemployment rates nation-wide are staggering, says Serrano, “and these new jobs to Weslaco can be a fresh start for families affected by the pandemic.”

“The realization of Harbor Freight coming to Weslaco is a lesson in building relationships,” says Marie McDermott, Executive Director of the EDC of Weslaco.  “Our community sees a new building going up in a matter of months,” says McDermott, “but to get to that point, it would have taken years to develop trust and confidence in Weslaco that our community can support a store like Harbor Freight.”

The EDC and the City of Weslaco are looking forward to the arrival of Harbor Freight Tools as an addition to the economic growth and sustainability of the community.  For more information, contact the EDC of Weslaco at 956-969-0838 or email svaldez@weslacoedc.com.
