MCALLEN, TEXAS – South Texas College (STC) Theatre will hold auditions for its last show of the spring semester, A Dream Play, a surreal drama by August Strindberg.
Auditions will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26 and Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the STC Cooper Center for Communication Arts – Black Box Studio, located at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. All STC and Rio Grande Valley community members ages 18 and over are welcome to audition.
In Strindberg’s A Dream Play, the author has sought to reproduce the disconnected, yet apparently logical form of the dream. Time and space do not exist. Characters divide, double, redouble, evaporate, condense, float out of each other, and converge.
Since the dream usually distresses rather than pleases, a tone of melancholy and sympathy runs through the shifting narrative. In the Dream, there are no secrets, no inconsistencies, no scruples, and there is no law. It neither judges nor absolves. It only relates.
The part that sleep, “the Liberator”, plays is often painful, but when the pain seems at its worst, the sufferer wakes up to be propitiated by reality, which however tormenting it may be, is still in that moment—and in contrast to the dream—a joy.
Director, Marcela Garza, seeks actors of all ages (especially those 40+) to play the more than 30 characters that will be doubled, tripled or even quadruple cast. The only constant character is Agnes or “the Daughter”. A Dream Play is scheduled for performance at STC’s Cooper Center for Communication Arts Black Box Studio May 2-5, 2019.
