The McAllen Heritage Center, museum of history and culture located in downtown McAllen opened its doors to the public during June 2008 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of McAllen history.

The museum itself was chartered in 2006, but much of the work involved in securing a location and developing the museum base collection was completed within a one-and-a-half-year period prior to moving into the former McAllen post office located in downtown McAllen, which is a historic landmark.

Since that time the museum has enjoyed the service of many supportive and dedicated board members which have contributed to the growth and success of the museum currently celebrating its 14th anniversary.
