November 7, 2024–The McAllen Citizens League (MCL) is pleased to host Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez as the featured speaker for its upcoming meeting. Judge Cortez will provide an update on key County initiatives, including the Courthouse, jail, drainage projects, the Prosperity Task Force, and RioPlex. 

Judge Cortez, serving his second term as Hidalgo County Judge, has led with dedication and innovation as the chief elected officer of Texas’ eighth-most populous county since 2018. In his dual role as County Judge and director of Emergency Management, he has steered the county through crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurricane Hanna, and the 2021 deep freeze, garnering recognition for emergency preparedness initiatives, including the award-winning Cooking School for Emergencies program.

A committed advocate for veterans and mental wellness, Judge Cortez has worked with partners to establish the Hidalgo County Mental Health Coalition and has allocated ARPA funds to train local mental health professionals. His leadership in economic development has been exemplified through the Prosperity Task Force, aimed at reducing poverty and fostering growth. Judge Cortez’s extensive experience, including terms as Mayor and City Commissioner of McAllen and a decades-long career as a CPA, highlights his enduring commitment to public service.

The McAllen Citizens League, founded in 1952, hosts educational and informative meetings on civic matters, culture, and current affairs. Luncheon meetings are held on the third Thursday of September through May.
