EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector recorded its largest day of apprehensions in almost five years. The RGV Sector leads the nation in illegal alien apprehensions and accounts for almost 40% of all arrests along the entire Southwest border.
Yesterday, RGV Sector agents arrested more than 1,500 subjects, which marks the largest number of apprehensions in a 24 hour period since 2014. The majority of these arrests are family units and unaccompanied children from Central and South America, which requires agents to process these individuals, greatly impacting the number of agents available to carry out the border security mission in the field. While 90% of the sectors total apprehensions this year are persons from an origin other than Mexico, 70% of the total apprehensions are family units and unaccompanied children.
At the current rate, the RGV Sector is on pace to reach 240,000 apprehensions for this fiscal year. -In case you missed it. Yesterday, the RGV Public Affairs Office issued a news release referring to an apprehension of a group of nearly 300 illegal aliens, marking the largest group apprehended in the RGV in a single incident this year.
