EDINBURG – In an effort to prepare the community for hurricane season, emergency preparedness fairs will be held across the county beginning Wednesday. The annual Dare to Prepare fairs are designed to assist residents in planning for weather-related emergencies.

To better reach the public, this year some of the fairs will be held in the evening and at larger and more convenient locations in the county. This will allow more residents the chance to attend the event and get the valuable information they need.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez, who also serves as the county’s Emergency Management Director, said Dare to Prepare provides tools and information for residents that will help them better prepare for disasters.

“As we have learned from last year’s severe flooding and the flooding we experienced in 2015, it is imperative for our county residents to be prepared before disaster strikes,” said Cortez. “It only takes one storm to change your life and community.”

Hidalgo County has not had a major hurricane in several years, however severe rain storms have brought high winds and flooding that has caused catastrophic damage to homes and businesses. The most recent was the 500-year event that hit the eastern portion of the county most severely in June 2018.

Two keys to weather safety are to prepare for the risks and to act on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials, said Emergency Management Coordinator Ricardo Saldaña.

Now in its 10th year, Dare to Prepare is a joint effort with the Texas A&M Colonias Program, Hidalgo County Office of Emergency Management, Commissioners Court, CRC directors, and local agencies and businesses.
