The City of Weslaco, the Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco (Weslaco EDC), and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) have been awarded a $1.4 Million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to help fund the UTRGV Center for Innovation & Commercialization (CIC), a mixed use incubation center for post-secondary education and training, business incubation, and locally based research.

Jorge Ayala, EDA Austin Regional Director, made the announcement at the grand opening ceremony for the Center for International Economic Development Opportunities (CIEDO) facility in Weslaco on Wednesday.

The City of Weslaco and the Weslaco EDC now have 30 days to respond to the terms and conditions provided by EDA, after which they will meet with engineers and the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council, who will be administering the project.

“We are delighted that Weslaco received the grant for the UTRGV Center for Innovation & Commercialization (UTRGV CIC) from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA). The Weslaco EDC has committed $1.4 million in matching funds to facilitate the successful completion of this partnership project with UTRGV and the City.  With the combination of the UTRGV CIC offering a world class entrepreneurship program right here in Weslaco and the CIEDO under the auspices of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council coordinating economic development activities region wide right down the street, Weslaco confirms its position as the logistical center for development of new business in the Rio Grande Valley.  This will not only have a positive economic impact in Weslaco but the entire region as well.” said Weslaco EDC Board President Richard Talbert.

The Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco (Weslaco EDC) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the creation of jobs through recruitment of new industry and helping existing companies relocate and/or expand. Our objective is job creation and adding wealth to the city of Weslaco.

The Weslaco EDC serves as a catalyst in increasing economic wealth and growth in Weslaco by fostering a positive business environment; assisting and facilitating investment in business interests in Weslaco; and adding value to Weslaco’s tax base.

Whether you are launching, expanding or relocating a business, it makes sense to choose Weslaco – it is the Business Center of the Rio Grande Valley.
