Texas Border Business –

The Valley Symphony Orchestra presents Chorale Masterpiece Concert V at the McAllen Civic Center (corner of Exp. 83 & 10th Street) in McAllen on Thursday, March 5 from 8 – 10pm. Don’t miss this exciting concert featuring compositions from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and will include the participation of the Valley Symphony Chorale, and Soprano, Rebecca Coberly.

The concert will open with Poulenc’s Gloria, a masterpiece for orchestra and chorus. Gloria sets the movement of the Ordinary of the Mass in celebratory, joyful, and contemplative moods. Dr. Rebecca Coberly, professor of voice at the University of Texas Pan American, will perform the beautiful and dramatic soprano solos. In addition to previous performances with the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, Dr. Coberly has sung in several solo recitals, oratorios, and concerts. She has also performed famous roles in opera and Broadway musicals such as Susanna in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music. With a performance style that is not only technically proficient, but also deeply heartfelt, Dr. Coberly’s singing is sure to touch the audience.

After intermission, the concert will continue with the orchestra’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien Op. 45. Tchaikovsky composed this orchestral fantasy in 1880 inspired by the Carnival of Rome, which he experienced first hand during a visit to Italy. The catchy tunes evoke Italian street songs and folk melodies audible at that occasion. Then, the orchestra will perform Fetes from Nocturnes by Claude Debussy, which will open with an explosion of melody and orchestral color.  And finally the symphony orchestra will wrap up with Arturo Marquez’ Danzon No. 2 performance, which was written as a tribute to the environment that nourished the genre of dance.

Come revel in the beautiful sounds of the Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale in Concert V – Chorale Masterpiece. Ticket prices range from $25 for Back House, $35 for Front House and $45 for Orchestra level tickets.  Senior, student and group discounts are available.  Certain applicable fees apply.  Tickets on sale now at the McAllen Convention Center Box Office located off of Exp. 83 & Ware Rd.
