Sandy, Utah, April 23 – The Rio Grande FC Toros earned their second win of the season after beating Real Monarchs SLC on the road 1-0. Jose Escalante’s goal in the first half helped the team seal the three points.

In the first half, the Toros had early possession of the ball but struggled to get any quality shots. The Monarchs attempted to catch the Toros defense by surprise when they quickly took a free kick. Monarch’s Ricardo Velasco passed the ball to Maikon Orellana, while the Toros defense was getting set, but his shot went wide.

The Toros would then score in the 24th minute. Robert Casner chipped the ball over the Monarch’s defense to Jose Escalante who calmly placed the ball in the back of the net on his first touch.

The RGV FC Toros had two great chances in the second half to double their lead. In the 58th minute Jose Escalante broke free from the defense and was taking the goalkeeper one-on–one. Instead of shooting, Escalante passed the ball to his right to Casner whose shot went over the crossbar. Real Monarch’s goalkeeper, Lalo Fernandez, then had an amazing save in the 65th minute to deny Emilio Garcia from scoring.

With the win, the Toros wrapped up their fourth away game in a row. The 1-0 win was also the club’s second clean sheet of the season. The RGV FC Toros now head home to prepare for their season home opener against LA Galaxy II on April 30th at the UTRGV Soccer and Track Complex at 7:30 CT.
