Harlingen, Matamoros Mayors to Sign Cooperation Agreement

Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell and Matamoros Mayor Norma Leticia Salazar will lead two public ceremonies Wednesday, December 10, 2014, to formalize a “sister city agreement” symbolizing direct cooperation between the two cities.

The mayors will sign the international document at 12 p.m. Wednesday at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium.. A ribbon cutting ceremony will occur at 1:30 p.m. in the Lon C. Hill Building, 502 E. Tyler Ave., where the City of Matamoros is establishing an office. Minister Rodolfo Quilantan Arenas, consul of Mexico in Brownsville, will be the guest of honor.

Elected city leaders previously approved the sister city agreement the two mayors will formally sign Wednesday. The public is welcome to attend both events.

The document states that its purpose is to “strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation” in ways that positively affect economic and social progress for the two cities. Some topics of mutual interest listed include public safety, trade, education, the environment, science and technology, and sports.
