The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at The University of Texas-Pan American in partnership with the BBVA Foundation is offering free workshops and a conference to small business owners where they can sharpen skills related to operation a successful business.
The full day conference – “Plan. Build. Secure: Grow and Protect Your Small Business Equity for Tomorrow” – is planned for 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on April 8 in Room 1.200 at UTPA’s Community Engagement and Student Success (CESS) Building located at 1407 E. Freddy Gonzalez Drive (at intersection with Hwy. 281). During the conference, expert speakers will discuss business value; credit; financial decisions on the bottom line; protecting your investment; credits, deductions, and taxes. The conference will end with a keynote presentation by Robert McDaniel, city president for BBVA Compass-McAllen, on the financial business practices of successful business owners.
In the free half-day workshop offered 8 a.m.-noon on May 7, attendees can receive basic training on understanding and managing business finances. The workshop, titled “Financial Basics & Analysis for Small Business Owners,” covers the following topics: Revenue and Expenses; Costs and Pricing; Profit and Loss Statement; Balance Sheet; Cash Flow Statement; Tools for Sales Growth; Use of Proceeds; and Sources of Financing. The May workshop, the last one of three offered at various locations, will also be held at the CESS Building, Room 1.200.

“It’s critical that business owners have a solid grasp of their finances for long-term sustainability. Some of the most important business decisions that business owners will make are ultimately expressed in financial documents. We encourage local business owners to participate in the workshop as well as the conference and pick up valuable information for the success of their businesses,” Juarez-Serna said.
